“Human Evolution Didn’t Slow Down; We Were Just Missing the Signal” (Live Science, by Kristina Killgrove)
This Live Science article reports on a new Nature study of about 16,000 ancient and modern West Eurasian genomes. The article claims that natural selection has continued to shape human traits over the past 10,000 to 18,000 years. It highlights increases in alleles for lighter skin, red hair, HIV and leprosy resistance, and B blood type. It also notes decreases in male-pattern baldness and rheumatoid arthritis susceptibility. The piece frames these allele-frequency shifts as proof that human evolution did not slow down. It contradicts earlier views of limited recent change.
While the underlying data showing changes in existing genetic variants under selection may be accurate as raw observation, the article’s interpretation is profoundly misleading. It is rooted in a materialistic and anti-Biblical presupposition. It repeatedly invokes evolution and natural selection as creative forces driving human evolution. In reality, these are textbook examples of adaptation. They represent the sorting and expression of pre-existing, God-designed genetic information within the human kind. No new genetic information was created. No novel traits arose from nothing. This is not evolution in any Darwinian sense.
Misuse of “Evolution” as Deceptive Rhetoric
The article and the study it promotes deliberately blur the line by calling allele-frequency changes evolution. Researchers like first author Ali Akbari state that human evolution did not slow down; we were just missing the signal. The piece describes natural selection acting on 479 gene variants to produce evolutionary change. This is classic equivocation. Biblical creation affirms abundant variation within created kinds, as described in Genesis 1:11-12, 21, 24-25, and 27. This includes built-in genetic diversity for survival and adaptation. After the Flood, the animals disembarked from the Ark, according to Genesis 8:17-19. They rapidly expressed existing genetics to fill diverse post-Flood environments. Examples include lighter or darker fur and varied beak shapes. This occurred without any new information arising or one kind transforming into another. The same principle applies to humans descending from Noah’s family, as recorded in Genesis 9-10. Post-Babel dispersion in Genesis 11 and subsequent environmental pressures would have selected for traits like skin tone suited to latitude and sunlight, for example, vitamin D synthesis. This matches exactly what the study observes. These are adaptations, not evolution.
The intent behind labeling it evolution is clear. It seeks to smuggle Darwinian common descent into everyday language. It implies that small changes prove the possibility of large-scale transformation from molecules to man. This is not neutral science. It is worldview propaganda. Scripture declares humans specially created in God’s image, according to Genesis 1:26-27 and 2:7. Humans are not the product of blind processes. To call observable variation human evolution is to deny the Creator while borrowing His designed mechanisms.
The Micro- versus Macro-Evolution Fallacy
The article does not explicitly use the term microevolution. However, it relies on the same sleight-of-hand that popular science writing often employs. It presents observable adaptation, what creationists call microevolution, as evidence that macro or Darwinian evolution is viable. This is a logical fallacy. Adaptation via natural selection is real and God-ordained. It culls harmful variants and favors those already present in the genome, preserving the kind. It does not generate the massive increases in genetic information required for one kind to become another. Examples include reptiles to birds or ape-like ancestors to humans. Mutations overwhelmingly degrade information. They do not build new, functional, complex systems.
Equating the two is like claiming that a dog breeder producing varied coat colors proves wolves can become whales. The study’s findings involve shifts in frequencies of existing alleles for pigmentation, immunity, and hair loss. These fit perfectly within the Biblical model of a young creation with rich genetic potential at the start. This was followed by rapid post-Flood adaptation. The findings do not support molecules-to-man evolution. That process would require vast new information over deep time. The article’s conclusion that evolution continued strongly is simply the researchers’ naturalistic bias imposed on data that actually confirm design and adaptation.
Theological and Scientific Implications
Biblically, this matters because evolutionism undermines the doctrine of creation, the Fall, and redemption. If humans are merely the latest output of an ongoing evolutionary process, then there is no historical Adam, no original sin, and no need for a Savior, as explained in Romans 5:12-19 and 1 Corinthians 15:21-22. The article’s narrative quietly erodes this foundation while pretending to report neutral science.
In sum, this piece is not advancing knowledge but advancing an anti-Biblical agenda. It takes God’s ingenious design for adaptability, evident in the post-Ark animals and in Noah’s descendants, and credits it to evolution. True science aligns with Scripture: adaptation is real; Darwinian evolution is a fiction. The data here beautifully illustrate the former and do nothing to rescue the latter. Readers should approach such headlines with discernment. They should test all things against the unchanging Word of God, according to 1 Thessalonians 5:21 and Acts 17:11.
