Birds Survived the Asteroid?

Scientific American Pushes Another Evolutionary Fairy Tale. But Scripture Tells the True Story

In his April 14, 2026, article for Scientific American titled “An asteroid extinguished all the dinosaurs except for birds. Here’s why,” paleontologist Steve Brusatte serves up the latest helping of the “birds are dinosaurs” mantra. The piece claims that while T. rex and Triceratops perished in the end-Cretaceous asteroid impact 66 million years ago, one group of dinosaurs, birds, made it through. Brusatte walks readers through the usual evolutionary script. Birds “evolved from feathered, ground-living carnivores” that “shrank their bodies, sheathed themselves in downy fluff, sprouted wings and took to the skies.” He trots out the familiar Liaoning Province fossils (like the wispy-feathered Zhenyuanlong) as proof that “these plumaged creatures tell the story of how birds evolved from dinosaurs” piecemeal over tens of millions of years. Features we see in modern birds, feathers, wishbones, hollow bones, are all recast as “dinosaur features” that were later “repurposed” for flight. Only the small, beaked, seed-eating, fast-growing “crown-group” birds survived the post-impact darkness and famine.

We’ve seen this playbook before. Secular science doesn’t just report data. It indoctrinates. And few tactics are more effective than telling wide-eyed kids who adore dinosaurs, “Guess what? The birds at your feeder are dinosaurs!” Brusatte and Scientific American keep hammering this line because it works. It slips macroevolution into children’s hearts under the cover of cute backyard robins and majestic eagles. No need for messy transitional fossils when you simply redefine the terms: “In truth, birds are dinosaurs.” It’s clever marketing for a worldview that denies the Creator.

Let’s be clear from a Biblical Creation perspective. Birds did not evolve from dinosaurs. Genesis 1 records the clear order of creation. On Day 5, God created the birds of the air, fully formed, feathered, flying creatures according to their kinds (Genesis 1:20-23). On Day 6, He made the land animals, including the great dinosaurs, also according to their kinds (Genesis 1:24-25). Two separate created kinds. Two separate days. No common ancestor. No slow, piecemeal transformation over “tens of millions of years.” The Bible presents kinds with built-in variety and adaptability, exactly what we observe, but never one kind morphing into another. Adaptation? Yes. Darwinian evolution from reptile to bird? Pure fiction.

Brusatte’s feather claims deserve special scrutiny. He leans heavily on those Chinese fossils to insist feathers were a dinosaur trait long before birds. Yet creation researchers have repeatedly shown these “feathers” are often nothing more than collagen fibers, misidentified filaments, or even fakes and artistic reconstructions. Take the infamous Archaeoraptor, for instance. It was hyped in the pages of National Geographic as a feathered dinosaur bird link but was later exposed as a fraudulent composite. A bird body had been glued to a dinosaur tail to manufacture a missing link. Similarly, fossils like Sinosauropteryx from Liaoning have “protofeathers” that studies reveal are simply collagen fibers, not true feathers at all. Even the iconic Archaeopteryx, long promoted as a transitional form, is actually a true bird with fully formed, complex flight feathers and other avian features. Evolutionists have incorrectly tried to reclassify it as a dinosaur to prop up their story. A specimen of Archaeopteryx is included in The Flood Museum collection as a powerful testimony to the created bird kinds preserved during the global Flood. True avian feathers, complex, interlocking, flight-ready structures, appear abruptly in the fossil record with birds, just as Genesis would predict. Scientific American’s continued insistence on feathered dinosaurs, despite the mounting problems and debunked claims, isn’t science advancing. It’s dogma doubling down. They need dinosaurs in feathers to prop up the evolutionary story. Without it, the house of cards collapses.

The extinction narrative itself rests on the same shaky foundation: millions of years, a single asteroid impact, and uniformitarian assumptions that ignore the global Flood of Noah’s day. The fossil record shows rapid burial in water-laid sediments worldwide, exactly what the Flood would produce. Soft tissue in dinosaur bones, delicate feathers preserved en masse, and polystrate fossils all scream catastrophic, recent burial, not slow accumulation over deep time. The “iridium layer” and Chicxulub crater get spun as proof of an asteroid, but Flood geology offers a far more coherent explanation rooted in the judgment described in Genesis 6-8.

Friends, this isn’t neutral science. It’s the religion of scientism dressed in lab coats, targeting the next generation with dinosaur love to steer them away from the God of Scripture. True science aligns with God’s Word. The birds at your window aren’t leftover dinosaurs. They are magnificent examples of the Creator’s design, singing His praises just as the psalmist declared: “I will sing unto the LORD as long as I live: I will sing praise to my God while I have my being” (Psalm 104:33).

If you’re tired of the evolutionary indoctrination masquerading as “settled science,” dig into the evidence for Biblical Creation and the global Flood. The data, rightly interpreted, points straight back to Genesis. There’s real hope when we start with God’s account instead of man’s ever-changing stories. The heavens declare His glory, and so do the birds He made on Day 5.
