Scientists Call It “Evolution Repeating Itself.” But It’s Adaptation, Not Evolution
A recent ScienceDaily report (July 30, 2026) highlights a study from the Norwegian University of Science and Technology and collaborators published in Nature Communications. Researchers examined the genomes of Scalesia, the Galápagos giant daisies. They found that deeply lobed, heat-tolerant leaf shapes (traits thought to help plants cope with dry, hot lowlands by reducing water loss and releasing heat) appeared independently several times in different lineages. Each time, different combinations of genes within the same leaf-development network were involved. Isolated populations also show large genetic differences, leading the team to suggest new species may be forming.
The article frames this as parallel evolution, adaptive radiation, and “evolution repeating its best ideas with different genetic tools,” a botanical counterpart to Darwin’s finches more than 150 years later. Professor Michael D. Martin and first author Vanessa Bieker describe the results as evidence of the “flexibility and creativity of evolution,” with plants that “evolved rapidly after arriving on the Galápagos from mainland South America.”
This is another clear example of secular scientists taking observed, limited variation and dressing it in the language of Darwinian evolution. What the data actually show is adaptation.
Adaptation Uses Existing Tools; Evolution Claims New Ones
True Darwinian evolution requires the accumulation of brand-new genetic information that produces novel body plans, organs, or kinds over deep time. What researchers documented in Scalesia is the repeated use of an existing regulatory network that already controls leaf development. Different combinations of genes within that pre-existing system yield similar leaf shapes suited to hot, dry conditions. The plants remain Scalesia, giant daisies. They have not become something fundamentally different.

This matches what we consistently see when scientists look carefully at variation in the wild or the lab: organisms express, fine-tune, or slightly modify genetic and regulatory information already present within the boundaries of their created kind. The phrase “after their kind” is repeated ten times in Genesis 1 for a reason. God designed living things with sophisticated, flexible toolkits that allow them to thrive in changing environments without inventing new kinds.
Leaf-shape variation that helps manage heat and water loss is a classic adaptive response. Parallel appearance of similar traits through different genetic routes within the same network is exactly what we should expect from a well-engineered system capable of rapid, environment-responsive adjustment. It is not evidence that random mutations plus natural selection invented the daisy kind or its developmental machinery in the first place.
Post-Flood Context Makes the Rapid Changes Expected
The Galápagos Islands are volcanic and relatively young on any timeline. In a biblical framework, the post-Flood world, roughly 4,500 years ago, presented animals and plants with radically altered climates, soils, and isolation as landmasses and islands settled after the global catastrophe. Creatures and plants dispersing from the Ark carried rich genetic variability. God’s design allowed that variability to be expressed and sorted quickly into forms suited to new habitats: thicker coats, altered digests, different leaf architectures, and more.
The Scalesia radiation fits this pattern of rapid diversification within the kind after the Flood. Isolated populations diverging genetically while remaining recognizably the same group of plants is population differentiation and adaptation, not the open-ended creation of new kinds from a common ancestor millions of years ago. Calling every useful change “evolution” empties the word of its distinctive (and unproven) claim that all life shares a single deep-time ancestry built by undirected processes.
We have written before about this exact distinction. Adaptation works with pre-existing information and regulatory systems already present within fixed boundaries. It is rapid, directed, and limited. Evolution, as popularly taught, demands the constant addition of brand-new genetic information to invent new body plans and kinds. One is observable engineering; the other remains a mechanical fantasy.
God’s Adaptation Machine on Display
The researchers themselves note that the same biological system controlling leaf development can be tweaked in multiple ways to reach a similar outcome. That is not the creativity of blind evolution. It is the hallmark of a purposeful design that anticipates environmental challenges. The Creator built robustness and flexibility into living systems so that after the Flood, and in every generation since, His creatures could multiply and fill the earth (Genesis 8:17; 9:1).
When secular reports repeatedly label adaptation as “evolution repeating itself,” they obscure the very evidence that points to intelligent design. The Galápagos daisies did not invent heat-tolerant leaves from nothing. They expressed options already present in the genetic and developmental toolkit God provided. That is good science when we call it by its proper name. It is also a reason for hope: the same God who engineered such adaptability is the One who offers life and restoration through Jesus Christ.
The data from Scalesia are fascinating. The interpretation that turns them into another Darwinian triumph is not. Adaptation is real, observable, and glorious. Evolution, in the grand sense claimed here, remains the unsupported story layered on top of it.
