We Are the Most Genetically Corrupt Generation

The Bible presents humanity as a fallen race (Genesis 3; Romans 5:12). Sin introduced death, disease, and suffering into a once-perfect creation. Yet the consequences run deeper than spiritual separation from God. From a biblical young-earth perspective, modern humans are not only fallen but also the most genetically corrupt humans who have ever lived. Adam and Eve left the Garden with flawless DNA—free of mutations. Every generation since has accumulated copying errors. This degeneration accelerated dramatically after the global Flood of Noah’s day, driven in part by the collapse of Earth’s protective magnetic field. The same process explains the sharp decline in human lifespans recorded in Genesis. We can extrapolate the same trend to intelligence: far from the evolutionary myth of steadily increasing brainpower over time, the evidence shows cognitive capacity has been declining. Ancient humans were genetically and intellectually superior. Today we bear the heaviest mutational load in history.

Perfect Beginnings, Then Progressive Corruption

Genesis 1–2 describes a “very good” creation (Genesis 1:31). Adam and Eve were formed directly by God with perfect genomes—no harmful mutations, no genetic load, no built-in aging. The Fall changed everything. Death entered the world (Romans 5:12), and with it came the biological reality of genetic mistakes during DNA replication. Each generation passes on slightly more errors than it inherited.

This process is precisely what geneticist Dr. John Sanford calls genetic entropy—the inevitable, net loss of information in the genome due to the accumulation of mostly deleterious mutations. Sanford’s groundbreaking work, including computer simulations and analysis of mutation rates, demonstrates that the human genome is not improving through natural selection but is systematically deteriorating. Far from evolving upward, humanity is genetically “running down” toward extinction unless divine intervention occurs. This matches the biblical timeline of a young creation and explains why we are more mutation-laden than any previous generation.

The Flood Accelerated the Decline

The global Flood (Genesis 6–9) was a cataclysm that reshaped Earth’s systems, including its magnetic field. Measurements since 1835 show Earth’s magnetic field has decayed at a rate consistent with a half-life of roughly 1,400 years. Extrapolating backward, the field was far stronger in the past—strong enough to shield life from intense cosmic radiation. After the Flood, rapid decay (linked to the tectonic and hydrological upheaval described in Genesis 7:11) allowed more cosmic rays to reach the surface. Ionizing radiation damages DNA, dramatically increasing mutation rates.

Creation scientists have long connected this magnetic collapse to the post-Flood explosion of genetic damage. The result is visible in the biblical record itself. Pre-Flood patriarchs lived 700–900+ years (Genesis 5). After the Flood, lifespans plummeted: Shem lived 600 years, Arphaxad 438, and by the time of Moses the average had dropped to 70–80 years (Psalm 90:10). This is not legend—it is a power-law decline that fits the mathematics of accumulating mutations perfectly. The Flood created a genetic bottleneck (only eight people survived), concentrating and accelerating the spread of errors. Modern humans inherit the cumulative damage of ~6,000 years of post-Flood mutation buildup. We are, by definition, the most genetically corrupt generation in history.

Intelligence Is Declining—Not Increasing

Evolution claims humanity has been ascending from ape-like ancestors to ever-greater intelligence over millions of years. The genetic and archaeological evidence contradicts this. If the genome is degenerating through genetic entropy, cognitive function—controlled by the most complex and mutation-sensitive parts of the DNA—must decline along with it.

Recent large-scale studies confirm the trend. American IQ scores dropped significantly between 2006 and 2018 in verbal reasoning, matrix reasoning, and mathematical ability—the first consistent evidence of the “Reverse Flynn Effect” in the United States. Similar reversals appear in several European countries, with drops of 0.2–0.3 IQ points per decade after decades of environmental gains. While the Flynn Effect (rising scores in the 20th century) was driven by better nutrition, education, and health, the underlying genetic substrate is now eroding.

Even more striking is the physical evidence: anatomically modern human brains have shrunk by approximately 13% compared with those of our ancestors 100,000 years ago, with a particularly sharp decline detected around 3,000 years ago in some analyses. Smaller brains in a species that once produced the sophisticated cave art, megalithic structures, and astronomical knowledge of the ancient world point to real biological regression, not cultural progress alone.

Biblical patriarchs, with near-perfect genomes and lifespans measured in centuries, would have possessed cognitive stability and capacity far beyond our own. Early post-Flood civilizations (built by Noah’s descendants) displayed advanced engineering and mathematics from the very beginning—consistent with high intelligence inherited from pre-Flood perfection, not gradual evolutionary ascent. The evolutionary narrative of ever-increasing intelligence is not only unsupported; it is directly contradicted by the direction of genetic change.

The Biblical and Scientific Verdict

The Fall introduced sin and death. The Flood accelerated genetic corruption through magnetic-field collapse and radiation exposure. Genetic entropy guarantees that every subsequent generation carries a heavier mutational load. We are therefore the most genetically degenerate humans who have ever walked the earth—closer to extinction thresholds than Adam, Noah, or Abraham ever were. Our declining lifespans and eroding cognitive metrics are not anomalies; they are the measurable outworking of a fallen, mutating genome in a post-Flood world.

This reality stands in direct opposition to the evolutionary story of upward progress. The evidence—biblical chronology, measured mutation accumulation, magnetic-field decay, IQ reversals, and brain-size trends—aligns with the scriptural account. Humanity began perfect and has been degenerating ever since. Yet the same Bible that diagnoses our corruption also offers hope: the Creator who formed Adam with flawless DNA has provided redemption through Jesus Christ (Romans 8:19–23). In Him, the ultimate restoration of creation—including our genetics—awaits those who trust in the One who spoke the genome into existence.
