New Study Debunks Long-Held Theory on Giant Dragonflies

Clear Evidence for the Biblical Pre-Flood World and Noah’s Global Flood

A fascinating new scientific discovery, highlighted today in Ars Technica, is once again showing how the fossil record aligns beautifully with the Bible’s account of a perfect creation, a global Flood, and a changed world afterward. Researchers publishing in the journal Nature have examined the flight muscles of modern insects and ancient griffinfly fossils (giant dragonfly-like creatures with wingspans up to two feet). Their findings overturn the textbook explanation that these giants could only exist because of much higher atmospheric oxygen levels during the so-called Carboniferous period some 300 million years ago.

For decades, evolutionists claimed that the Carboniferous atmosphere contained up to 35% oxygen (compared to today’s 21%), which supposedly allowed passive diffusion through insects’ tracheal breathing tubes to support such enormous body sizes. Without that extra oxygen, they argued, giant dragonflies like Meganeura would have suffocated. The new study, however, reveals that the volume of tracheoles in flight muscles is tiny—only about 1% of muscle volume—and remains consistent even across vastly different insect sizes, both living and fossilized. Insects can actively adjust their breathing and oxygen delivery far better than previously thought. In short, these griffinflies could theoretically fly and thrive in today’s atmosphere. Oxygen was never the limiting factor.

Secular scientists now scramble for other explanations: perhaps the absence of birds and bats as predators allowed gigantism to persist, or later ecological shifts, competition, and the general tendency of larger species toward extinction eventually shrank insect sizes. Yet all of this is framed within millions of years of slow, gradual change.

When we examine the same evidence through the lens of biblical creation and the historical record in God’s Word, the data fit perfectly—without the need for deep time or evolutionary assumptions. Genesis 1:20-25 tells us that on Day Five God created every kind of flying creature, including insects, and declared them “good.” In the pre-Flood world described in Genesis 6–7, conditions were dramatically different: lush vegetation covered the earth, the climate was more uniform, and atmospheric conditions (possibly including higher oxygen or barometric pressure from a pre-Flood vapor canopy or enhanced plant productivity) supported the full genetic potential of created kinds. Giant insects, just like giant mammals and reptiles preserved in the fossil record, represent the original created diversity and size within those kinds—not millions of years of trial-and-error evolution.

The Carboniferous rock layers that contain these giant dragonflies are not evidence of ancient swamps slowly turning into coal over eons. As creation researchers at Answers in Genesis, the Institute for Creation Research, and Creation Ministries International have documented for decades, these vast coal deposits and associated fossils formed rapidly during the early to middle stages of Noah’s global Flood (Genesis 7:11–8:3). Pre-Flood forests and coastal ecosystems were swept up, buried under enormous sediment loads, and compressed into coal beds in just months or weeks—not millions of years. The “Carboniferous” is simply one phase of the year-long Flood catastrophe that reshaped the entire planet.

The new study’s demolition of the oxygen-size link actually strengthens the biblical model. Creation scientists have long noted that while higher pre-Flood oxygen is possible, it is not necessary to explain gigantism. Insects actively ventilate their tracheae (they do “breathe,” contrary to older assumptions), and the pre-Flood world provided ideal conditions for creatures to reach their maximum created size. After the Flood, the world was profoundly altered: climates shifted dramatically during the post-Flood Ice Age, new predators (including birds and mammals that survived on the Ark) appeared, and ecological competition intensified. Under these changed conditions, natural selection acting on the genetic variation already present within created kinds favored smaller, more agile individuals. Giant varieties were no longer sustainable—just as we see with many other post-Flood creatures. This is not evolution; it is the loss of genetic information and variation within kinds, exactly as the biblical “kind” framework predicts.

We consistently show how catastrophic Flood geology explains the fossil record far better than slow-and-gradual uniformitarianism. The same rapid burial processes that preserved delicate dragonfly wings in coal seams also explain the sudden appearance of giants in the record and their equally sudden disappearance afterward. Mount St. Helens and other modern catastrophes demonstrate how quickly layers, fossils, and even coal-like deposits can form. The Bible’s timeline—from creation about 6,000 years ago to the Flood around 4,500 years ago—fits the actual data without contradiction.

This discovery is yet another reminder that the fossil record does not support evolution or deep time; it testifies to the accuracy of Scripture. The same God who created the original dragonfly kinds, judged a rebellious world through the Flood, and preserved representatives on the Ark is the same Lord who offers salvation today. As 2 Peter 3:5-6 warns, scoffers deliberately forget the Flood that once covered the earth. But for those who trust God’s Word, every new study like this brings fresh hope.

The giant dragonflies of the past are not evolutionary leftovers from a distant past. They are powerful witnesses to a once-perfect creation, a global judgment by water, and the faithfulness of our Creator who has promised never again to flood the entire earth (Genesis 9:11). In a world that often doubts the Bible, this research gives us renewed confidence to proclaim the truth of God’s Word and point people to Jesus Christ—the ultimate Ark of salvation for all who believe.
