New Study Uncovers Hidden Structure Beneath Australia

Powerful Evidence of Catastrophic Plate Tectonics and the Fountains of the Deep During Noah’s Global Flood
A remarkable new geological discovery, reported just today in Earth.com, is once again reminding us how the Bible’s account of Noah’s Flood (Genesis 7–8) provides the true framework for understanding Earth’s history. Researchers using magnetotelluric imaging have identified a buried “step” or ledge in the lithosphere beneath eastern Australia. This hidden structure stretches across a 1,860-mile volcanic corridor and perfectly aligns with chains of unusual volcanoes, including those in Victoria’s Newer Volcanics Province and the Cosgrove volcanic track.
The study reveals a broad zone of unusually hot, electrically conductive mantle rock lying deeper than about 78 miles (roughly 125 km). Temperatures there hover near 2,550°F—hot enough that even modest pressure changes can trigger melting. Most tellingly, the researchers point to water and volatiles released from ancient subducting seafloor as the key ingredient that lowered melting temperatures and “primed a broad underground zone for magma generation.” They explicitly note that this “wet mantle” allowed melt to form more easily than in dry conditions, while the buried lithospheric step acted as a structural choke point that focused rising magma into narrow volcanic lines. Hydrated minerals in the lower crust further explain why eruptions remained localized despite the wide deep-heat source.
At first glance, secular scientists describe this as the work of “ancient seafloor sinking” over millions of years. But when viewed through the lens of Scripture and catastrophic plate tectonics (CPT), the data fit perfectly with the events of the global Flood just thousands of years ago. Genesis 7:11 declares: “In the six hundredth year of Noah’s life, in the second month, the seventeenth day of the month, the same day were all the fountains of the great deep broken up, and the windows of heaven were opened.” Those fountains were not mere springs—they marked the catastrophic rupture of Earth’s crust and the sudden release of vast volumes of water from beneath the surface.
In the CPT framework this breaking open of the fountains initiated runaway subduction. Pre-Flood oceanic plates, loaded with water-saturated sediments and hydrated minerals, began to sink rapidly into the mantle. The cold, dense slabs accelerated downward at speeds far beyond anything observed today, dragging entire ocean floors into the depths. As these slabs subducted, they carried enormous quantities of water deep into the mantle—exactly the “volatiles, water and gases” the Australian study now detects. This water dramatically lowers the melting point of mantle rock, creating the broad conductive zones of near-melt conditions described in the paper. The “buried step” in the lithosphere is precisely what we would expect from the violent, rapid plate collisions and thickness variations that occurred as continents raced across the globe during the Flood year.
The study’s own data beautifully illustrate this. The wide mantle conductor does not fit the slow, isolated “hotspot” or “mantle plume” stories of uniformitarian geology. Instead, it matches the massive, continent-scale heating and hydration produced when runaway subduction stirred the mantle like never before. The localized volcanic outbreaks—focused where the lithospheric step created choke points—reflect the way post-subduction mantle flow and edge-driven convection continued to operate for a short time after the Flood waters receded. Even the recent eruptions in southern Australia (dated by secular methods to just 4,000–5,000 years ago) align with the lingering heat and water left over from the Flood’s tectonic upheaval. These fit comfortably within the biblical timeline of the post-Flood Ice Age, when residual volcanic activity was still common worldwide.
This is not an isolated find. Similar discoveries around the globe—rapidly buried fossils, vast coal deposits, and the Great Unconformity itself—continue to testify that the Flood was a real, global cataclysm that reshaped our planet in a single year. The presence of deep mantle water is no surprise to those who take Genesis at its word; it is the lasting signature of the fountains of the great deep.
As we have shown here time and again, true science, when stripped of millions-of-years assumptions, consistently affirms the historical accuracy of God’s Word. The same Flood that judged a rebellious world also preserved a remnant—eight souls and every kind of animal—through the ark. That same God offers forgiveness and new life today through the finished work of Jesus Christ, the ultimate Ark of salvation.
The hidden structure beneath Australia is more than an interesting geological puzzle. It is fresh evidence that the fountains of the deep really did break open, that runaway subduction really did reshape continents, and that the water of judgment truly did cover the earth—exactly as the Bible records. In a world that often doubts Scripture, discoveries like this give us renewed hope: the same powerful God who judged through the Flood is the same loving God who saves through the atonement of Jesus Christ.
