The Illusion of Accelerating Expansion

The Standard Evidences for Accelerating Expansion Lose Their Force

Scripture repeatedly declares that God “stretched out the heavens.” This divine act, far from poetic language, provides the precise mechanism that explains the redshift observed in distant starlight, the apparent great age of the universe, and the remarkable uniformity of the cosmic microwave background, while confirming that our cosmos is in fact young, consistent with the biblical timeline of approximately 6,000 years since Creation. Far from standing alone, this stretching integrates seamlessly with the biblical account of the “hammered-out” firmament (raqia) formed on Day 2 from the primordial Deep, offering a cohesive young-earth cosmology that aligns with both ancient revelation and modern observations, including recent James Webb Space Telescope discoveries and emerging evidence of cosmological non-uniformity.

The Holy Spirit, speaking through the prophets, uses the Hebrew word natah (“to stretch out, spread out, extend like a curtain or tent”) no fewer than eleven times to describe God’s creative work. Isaiah 40:22 declares that He “stretches out the heavens like a curtain, and spreads them out like a tent to dwell in.” Isaiah 44:24 affirms, “I am the LORD, who makes all things, who stretches out the heavens all alone.” Jeremiah 10:12 adds that He stretches out the heavens by His understanding. This stretching occurred during Creation Week, climaxing on Day 4 when the sun, moon, and stars were placed in the firmament (Genesis 1:14-19). It was a supernatural, rapid expansion of space itself, exactly as modern observations of redshift appear to record. When God hammered out the raqia on Day 2 (Genesis 1:6-8; Job 37:18) and then stretched the heavens, the fabric of space thinned and expanded, lengthening the wavelengths of light traveling through it. The result is the cosmological redshift we measure today. That single, finished act accounts for the data without requiring ongoing expansion, dark energy, or billions of years.

Secular cosmology interprets the same data through the lens of the Friedmann-Lemaître-Robertson-Walker metric and a 13.8-billion-year expanding universe. Within that framework, several observations are claimed to demonstrate that the expansion is not only continuing but accelerating. Each of these claims, however, rests on assumptions that the biblical account of a completed stretch does not share. When those assumptions are set aside, the evidence for acceleration dissolves, and the observations become consistent with the young, stretched cosmos described in Scripture.

Type Ia Supernovae

Distant Type Ia supernovae appear fainter than expected in a purely matter-dominated, decelerating model. Secular researchers concluded that the expansion must therefore be accelerating under the influence of a mysterious dark energy (Riess et al. 1998; Perlmutter et al. 1999).

From the perspective of the stretched heavens, this conclusion is an artifact of the wrong historical model. Type Ia supernovae are standardized by assuming a cosmology and a time-dilation factor that themselves presuppose continuous expansion over deep time. When those assumptions are removed, or when corrections for progenitor age and host-galaxy properties are properly applied, the apparent need for acceleration weakens or disappears (Son et al. 2025; Sah, Rameez & Sarkar 2026). Distant supernovae occur in environments whose stellar populations differ systematically from nearby ones; younger stellar populations can produce intrinsically fainter events. The dimming is therefore not evidence that space is accelerating today, but a signature of the different conditions created when God stretched the heavens and placed mature stellar systems into the newly expanded firmament.

The James Webb Space Telescope has compounded the difficulty for the deep-time interpretation by revealing massive, chemically enriched, and even quiescent galaxies at redshifts once thought to represent only a few hundred million years after a Big Bang. Such mature structures fit a Creation Week in which God organized complete worlds on Day 4, not a slow evolutionary buildup. The light we receive carries the imprint of the stretch itself; the supernovae are simply part of the finished creation whose light has been lengthened by the natah of the heavens. Even within the secular literature the debate continues, with some analyses affirming that the acceleration signal remains robust after recalibration (Wiseman et al. 2026) while others find that proper age corrections reverse the inference of isotropic acceleration. The biblical framework removes the necessity for either side of that debate by locating the redshift in a completed divine act rather than ongoing cosmic dynamics.

Baryon Acoustic Oscillations

Secular cosmology treats a preferred scale in the clustering of galaxies as the fossil imprint of sound waves that traveled through a hot plasma in the early universe. Measuring that scale at different redshifts is said to map the expansion history and to require dark energy for consistency (DESI Collaboration 2024, 2025).

This interpretation begins by assuming the very history it claims to prove. The biblical account offers a different origin for large-scale structure. On Day 4 God placed the stars and organized the galaxies within the stretched firmament. The preferred clustering scale is simply part of the ordered arrangement He established. There is no need for an early plasma phase, acoustic oscillations, or a subsequent dark-energy-driven acceleration. Once the completed stretch is recognized as the source of redshift, the baryon acoustic oscillation “ruler” ceases to demand ongoing acceleration; it becomes another feature of the mature cosmos God stretched into place.

Cosmic Microwave Background Combined with Low-Redshift Data

The near-perfect blackbody spectrum and tiny temperature fluctuations of the cosmic microwave background, when combined with supernova or baryon acoustic oscillation measurements, are claimed to require a flat universe dominated by dark energy.

Scripture supplies a more direct explanation. The uniformity of the microwave background arises from the orderly, divine scattering of primordial material from the Deep as God hammered out the raqia and stretched the heavens. Density fluctuations were imprinted by the same creative act that organized the stars, not by quantum seeds stretched during a hypothetical inflationary epoch. Known anomalies in the large-scale pattern of the background already sit uncomfortably with the simplest inflationary picture. Combining the microwave background with low-redshift probes only appears to confirm dark energy inside the circular framework that already assumes continuous expansion over billions of years. A rapid, finished stretch, possibly accompanied by a declining speed of light in the early creation, accounts for the observed background without deep time or acceleration.

Growth of Large-Scale Structure, Weak Lensing, and Galaxy Clusters

These probes examine how rapidly structure has grown under gravity and are said to require accelerated expansion to suppress growth in the manner observed.

Again the conclusion depends on the assumed expansion history. In a universe that was stretched to its present size during Creation Week, galaxies and clusters were created mature and already distributed according to God’s design. There is no multi-billion-year growth history to measure. Apparent suppression of growth is simply the observation of the finished creation. Weak-lensing signals and cluster abundances therefore do not independently establish acceleration; they are consistent with a cosmos whose large-scale architecture was established in a single divine week and then stretched into the expanse we observe.

Dynamical Tests such as the Integrated Sachs-Wolfe Effect

Cross-correlations between the microwave background and large-scale structure are interpreted as evidence that gravitational potentials are decaying because the expansion is accelerating.

These signals are subtle and highly sensitive to the assumed cosmological model. In a finished stretch the large-scale gravitational potentials remain essentially static on the scales we observe today. The correlations lose their necessity as evidence for dark energy once the continuous-expansion assumption is removed. They become consistent with the stable, ordered heavens God stretched out by His understanding.

The Completed Work of the Creator

All of the listed evidences for accelerating expansion rest upon the same interpretive scaffold: the universe is described by an evolving spacetime that requires dark energy to fit the data. The biblical language of God stretching out the heavens supplies a different scaffold, a rapid, finished, supernatural expansion of the fabric of space during Creation Week. That single act produces the observed redshift, the reach of light from distant objects, the uniformity of the microwave background, and the mature structures revealed by the James Webb Space Telescope, all within the biblical timeline affirmed in Doctrine and Covenants 77:6-7 and the prophetic records of Moses and Abraham.

Dark energy then becomes an unnecessary mathematical patch required only because the wrong history was assumed. Recent tensions in the data, the Hubble tension, unexpectedly mature high-redshift galaxies, possible supernova systematics, and mild preferences for evolving rather than constant dark energy, already show the standard model under strain. The stretching of the heavens removes the need for the patch altogether.

As you look up at the night sky, the redshift you see is not proof of billions of years; it is the lingering echo of the moment the Creator hammered out the firmament, stretched out the heavens by His understanding, and scattered and organized the cosmos in a single week. The same Lord who stretched the heavens is the true Light of the world, offering salvation today through Jesus Christ. The Bible was right all along. The universe is young. The firmament stands as a hammered and stretched testament to divine power. And God’s Word endures forever as trustworthy history from the Flood to the farthest galaxies.
