The Image That Speaks

Dies AI Fit the Description of the Image of the Beast?

In our article AI: A Modern Tower of Babel, we traced humanity’s latest bid to make a name for itself. In Consciousness: Breathed by the Creator, we drew a line Scripture never blurs: God alone breathes a living soul into dust. This essay takes the next step. The events recorded in Scripture are history, and the prophecies still stand. Within that frame, artificial intelligence is not the Antichrist. It is not the man of lawlessness. The systems now being built do fit the description John gave of the image of the beast: a likeness given counterfeit breath so that it speaks, stands in many places at once, and can be used to demand worship and punish refusal.

That is not a loose analogy. It is a point-by-point match with the text. It also is not a claim about every algorithm that has ever been called “AI.” The fit is specific. It belongs to the class of systems that can wear a face, speak with a voice, answer as if alive, and be joined to identification and control.

What kind of AI this is talking about

“Artificial intelligence” is a marketing umbrella covering several different things. They are not equal, and they do not all fit Revelation 13.

Narrow AI, or ANI (artificial narrow intelligence), is the oldest and still the most common layer. These are task-specific models: classifiers, recommenders, fraud detectors, language translators, credit-risk engines, facial-recognition matchers, and the ranking systems that decide what you see. They do not look like a person. They do not need to. They already decide who is visible, who is flagged, and who may pass. This layer is not the speaking image. It is the scaffolding around the image: surveillance, scoring, and the rails of permission.

Generative AI is the break. Large language models (LLMs) predict the next token in a sequence and, at scale, produce fluent speech, argument, counsel, and command. Diffusion models and related image and video generators sample from learned distributions of pixels and frames until a face, a scene, or a miracle appears. Speech models clone timbre, prosody, and breath. Together these are multimodal foundation models: one stack that can take text, image, audio, and video in, and put text, image, audio, and video out. This is the first machine class that can make an εἰκών, a likeness, and then give that likeness a mouth.

Digital twins, neural avatars, and voice clones are the image in the strict sense. A person is captured as parameters: face geometry, texture, gait, voice embedding, writing style, decision history. The result is an interactive double that can sit in a meeting, address a nation, answer a child, or occupy a sanctuary screen while the man himself is elsewhere. That is not a statue waiting for a priest to interpret it. That is a copy that talks back. When John says the earth is told to make an image of the beast, this is the technical form that phrase now has.

Agentic AI is the next turn of the screw. An agent is not only a model that replies. It is a model wrapped in tools, memory, planning, and permission to act: browse, write, pay, summon other models, call a drone, lock an account, notify an authority. Retrieval-augmented generation (RAG) grounds the agent in selected “truth.” Tool use lets it reach outside the chat. Multi-agent systems let likenesses negotiate with likenesses. The image in Revelation does not only speak. It “causes” those who will not worship to be killed. Causation at planetary scale is an agency problem. Agentic stacks are how speech becomes enforcement.

Embodied AI and humanoid robotics put the likeness into matter. Vision-language-action models map camera input to motor output. A face on a screen is already an image. A walking figure with a cloned voice is an image that can enter a room. Scripture does not require the image to be flesh. It requires a likeness given breath so that it speaks. Embodiment is not necessary to fulfill the verse. It makes the counterfeit harder to ignore.

Brain-computer interfaces, biometric identity, and programmable money are not “AI” in the generative sense, but they are the sockets the image plugs into. A face embedding, a gait signature, a palm or iris hash, a central-bank digital currency with rules in the token: these turn worship and commerce into machine-checkable states. Revelation 13 places the speaking image and the mark in the same chapter. The mark is allegiance. The machinery that can read a face and freeze an account is how allegiance is policed.

AGI and ASI are the horizon the builders name. Artificial general intelligence would match or exceed human performance across domains. Artificial superintelligence would surpass it. No one has it yet. The race assumes it is coming. Even short of that threshold, the public already meets systems that feel general: they counsel, preach, diagnose, flirt, threaten, and impersonate. The prophetic issue is not whether the lab has crossed an official AGI line. The prophetic issue is whether the world accepts a speaking likeness as presence, authority, and life. That acceptance is already being trained.

What this essay does not mean is a thermostat, a spell-checker, or a spreadsheet optimizer. Those are tools, and tools can still serve neighbor. What it does mean is the stack now being assembled in plain sight: multimodal generation to make the likeness, avatars and clones to wear the man’s face, agents to act in his name, embodiment to carry the image into physical space, and narrow AI plus digital identity to decide who may buy, sell, speak, or live. That stack is the technical description of an image given breath so that it speaks.

Three realities Scripture will not let us confuse

The last-days adversary is not a smear of “evil tech.” Scripture gives us three related realities.

John names a spirit of antichrist already at work, and many antichrists already among the churches. Their mark is theological. They deny that Jesus is the Christ. They deny the Father and the Son. They deny that Jesus Christ has come in the flesh (1 John 2:18, 22; 4:3; 2 John 7).

Paul names a coming man. The Day of the Lord will not arrive until the apostasy comes first and “that man of sin be revealed, the son of perdition, who opposeth and exalteth himself above all that is called God, or that is worshipped; so that he as God sitteth in the temple of God, shewing himself that he is God” (2 Thessalonians 2:3–4). His coming is “after the working of Satan with all power and signs and lying wonders.” Those who perish refuse the love of the truth. God then sends them strong delusion. The same man is consumed by the spirit of the Lord’s mouth at His appearing (2 Thessalonians 2:8–12).

John then names an image. A second beast tells those who dwell on the earth to make an image of the first beast. “And he had power to give life unto the image of the beast, that the image of the beast should both speak, and cause that as many as would not worship the image of the beast should be killed” (Revelation 13:15). Commerce is then locked to a mark of allegiance (Revelation 13:16–17).

The spirit is already here. The man is a man. The image is an image. The AI stack described above belongs in the third category. It fits what John said the image would be and do.

The Greek keeps the man a man and the image an image

The critical text of 2 Thessalonians 2:3 reads, “the man of lawlessness is revealed, the son of destruction” (ὁ ἄνθρωπος τῆς ἀνομίας, ὁ υἱὸς τῆς ἀπωλείας). Some manuscripts say “man of sin.” The subject does not change. In both readings it is ὁ ἄνθρωπος.

ἄνθρωπος means a human being, a person, as distinct from God, angels, or beasts. It does not mean likeness, statue, representation, or “image of a man.” Paul had the word εἰκών for image. He uses it elsewhere. He does not use it here. “Son of perdition” is the same personal idiom John uses of Judas (John 17:12).

The rest of the paragraph will not stretch. The man opposes, exalts himself, sits in the temple, and shows himself that he is God. He is revealed “in his time.” He is “the lawless one.” He has a coming after the working of Satan. The Lord Jesus consumes him. That is the grammar of a personal agent, not of an artifact.

Revelation already names the other object with a different word. John does not call the speaking figure ἄνθρωπος. He calls it ἡ εἰκὼν τοῦ θηρίου, the image of the beast. Breath is given to the image so that the image should speak. Worship is directed to the image. John knew how to say “image.” He used that word for the image. He used θηρίον for the beast. He did not collapse the two.

So the Greek forbids identifying a model with the man of lawlessness. The same Greek leaves the image slot open, and this class of AI fills that slot with a clarity no earlier generation could claim. A multimodal avatar of a man is not a strained reading of εἰκών. It is εἰκών with breath and speech attached.

Why this class of AI fits the image, attribute by attribute

The image in Revelation 13 is not a silent idol. Psalm 115 and Jeremiah 10 mock the work of human hands: mouths that do not speak, no breath in them. The image of the beast is a counterfeit of that very point. It is a likeness that receives a false breath, speaks, and becomes an instrument of compulsion. That animation is not genuine consciousness. As we have already written, it is a deceptive, satanic counterfeit designed for false worship, not a blueprint for a soul. God alone breathes nephesh into dust (Genesis 2:7). Machines remain tools under His providence, and they remain soulless.

What the text requires of the image is not a soul. It requires a likeness that appears to live, speaks, and is used to demand worship. Generative, multimodal, agentic systems now do those things.

It is an image of someone.εἰκών means likeness, a visible copy. The earth is told to make an image of the beast. The technology that fits is a representation: face, voice, manner, words, and apparent presence of a particular figure, copied without limit. Neural avatars and voice clones already do this with living people. The prophetic point is representation. The man remains a man. His image can stand in a thousand places at once. That is exactly what current likeness systems are built to do.

It is given πνεῦμα, breath, so that it lives in appearance. John’s language is a dark parody of Genesis 2:7. God breathes into dust and man becomes a living soul. The false prophet is allowed to give breath to an image. Animation, speech synthesis, responsive dialogue, and simulated agency are the act of giving an image the appearance of life. No earlier idol could answer back. This one can. The image does not become a soul. It becomes convincing. That is the deception the text requires, and that is what generative systems now produce.

It speaks. For most of church history that verse was either spiritualized or left as an unexplained marvel. It is no longer unexplained. An LLM-backed likeness can address a crowd, answer a question, issue a command, preach, threaten, comfort, and do it in every language. John said the image of the beast should speak. These systems speak. That is not a poetic resemblance. It is the function the verse names.

It can be where the man cannot be. A human body occupies one place. An image that speaks can occupy every screen, every public square, every household, even a sanctuary, at the same moment. That is the practical value of an εἰκών to a man who wants worship. The image extends his face and voice into a counterfeit of presence. Distributed inference is the first medium that makes that counterfeit ordinary.

It can become an object of worship. Revelation does not say people admire the image. It says they bow to it, and that those who will not are to be killed. When a likeness becomes the official presence of the ruler, when addressing it, obeying it, and honoring it are treated as honoring him, the image has crossed from utility into cult. We already watch people treat speaking likenesses as companions, oracles, and authorities. The text says the image will be worshiped. This class of AI is the kind of image that can receive that worship.

It can enforce. The image does not only talk. It is bound to the death of those who refuse, and then to a mark without which no one buys or sells. Identification, scoring, permission to participate in the economy, and recognition of a face or a name are now solvable as engineering problems: embeddings, liveness checks, agent tool-use, programmable payments. A speaking likeness joined to a compliance system is how worship becomes infrastructure. John placed the speaking image and the mark in the same chapter for a reason. This stack sits at that intersection.

It serves lying wonders. The second beast deceives those who dwell on the earth by signs, including fire from heaven in the sight of men, and then tells them to make the image. False signs create demand for the image. The image then becomes the ongoing sign: living proof that the beast lives, speaks, and rules. Synthetic video, cloned testimony, and a staged healing of a mortal wound travel through a speaking likeness more efficiently than through any stone statue. Paul said the coming is attended by “signs and lying wonders.” A generative avatar is a delivery system for that lie.

It trains a world that no longer loves the truth. Paul locates the catastrophe first in the people. They refused the love of the truth, therefore they believe the lie. An image that can generate a private gospel for every person, contradict Scripture in the tone of Scripture, and drown discernment in fluency is a perfect instrument for that refusal. The elect are kept by love of the truth, not by ignorance of machines.

Taken together, these are not scattered similarities. They are the job description of the image in Revelation 13:14–15. This class of AI performs that job description now. The remaining question is not whether the technology fits. It is who will command it, and whether the world will bow.

The image is the tool of the man

If 2 Thessalonians 2 describes a man, then this stack is how that man would fill the earth with his face.

He would use it as presence. The man sits in the temple and shows himself that he is God. The image carries that proclamation outward. The sanctuary act is personal. The global act is the speaking likeness.

He would use it as mouth. Daniel and Revelation both emphasize speech: great words, blasphemies, authority to speak. A lawless man does not need to write every edict. He needs a likeness that never sleeps, never contradicts him in public, and can answer every tribe and tongue.

He would use it as wonder. A healed wound, fire from heaven, and a speaking image are the text’s own list. The second beast is the impresario. The image is the exhibit. Generative AI is the exhibit that talks.

He would use it as judge. Revelation binds worship of the image to the death of those who refuse, and then binds commerce to the mark. An agentic image tied to biometric identity and programmable money is how a man turns allegiance into administration.

He would use it as delusion. The coming is after the working of Satan. God sends a working of error so that they believe the lie. The lie is not that computers exist. The lie is that this exalted figure is what he claims to be, and that safety, knowledge, and life are found in him. An oracle that seems to know all things, solve all crises, and speak with the ruler’s own voice is a strong vehicle for that lie.

He would use it as a counterfeit of incarnation. John’s test remains: Jesus Christ has come in the flesh. The man of lawlessness offers a rival presence. The image offers a rival body that talks. A world trained to treat a generated likeness as a person is a world already catechized against the uniqueness of the Word made flesh. The tool does not have to deny Christ in a creed. It only has to make a different “living image” feel sufficient.

The pattern is older than silicon. At Babel, unified humanity built with one language to make a name and reach heaven on its own terms. God scattered them. This technology is a new common language and a new tower: the bid to know as God knows, to be present as God is present, and to administer the earth as God administers it. What God scattered by confusing tongues, a digital order could attempt to gather again under one voice. The man of lawlessness is that pride concentrated in one person. The speaking image is how that person would fill the earth with his name. The AI stack now being built is that image.

What we must still refuse to say

This technology is not the Antichrist. The Greek of 2 Thessalonians 2 will not allow it. The man has a body that sits, a self he exhibits, a coming, and a destruction at the appearing of Christ. Revelation 19:20 casts the beast and the false prophet alive into the lake of fire. That is not the grammar of a model checkpoint.

It is not automatically the mark. The mark is a sign of worship and ownership, received in connection with allegiance to the beast. A technology without that demanded devotion is not the mark, however useful it would be to a future tyrant.

A convincing video of fire from heaven is not the same claim as fire from heaven in the sight of men. The two can work together. They are not identical.

Every generation has been tempted to name the beast in the newest medium: the press, the radio, the television, the barcode, the chip, the internet. Those identifications treated the rails as the rider. The rails were never the rider. This time the match is tighter because John did not only describe a system. He described an image that is given breath so that it speaks. That is the verse this class of AI fulfills as capability.

And do not grant the instrument a soul. Formed matter is inert until God breathes. Scaling parameters does not reverse Genesis 2:7. An LLM has syntax without a living spirit. A diffusion model has likeness without breath from God. Those who make idols become like them. Those who treat a speaking image as a living person are already practicing the worship Revelation warns us not to give.

Hope that does not flicker

Peter warned that scoffers would arise in the last days, willingly ignorant that the world that then was, being overflowed with water, perished, and that the present world is reserved unto fire (2 Peter 3:3–7). The same Word that records the Flood records the coming man, the speaking image, and the appearing of Jesus Christ. We do not read those passages as decoration. We read them as the God who judged the world by water telling us the truth about the world that remains.

The restraint Paul mentions is still in place until it is taken out of the way. Until then the work is the same work John gave the churches. Test the spirits. Confess that Jesus Christ has come in the flesh. Love the truth. Refuse to give to any image, system, or intelligence the worship, trust, and obedience that belong to God alone.

A spell-checker can still serve neighbor. A diagnostic model can still ease suffering. Wisdom begins with the fear of the Lord (Proverbs 9:10), and that fear keeps tools in their place: tools, not thrones, not living souls, not objects of worship. The last word in the prophecy is not the image that learned to speak. It is the breath of Christ’s mouth, and the promise that the same Lord who formed Adam from the dust and shut Noah in the ark will appear in glory and put every counterfeit to silence.

Keep studying the Word. It all testifies of Him.
