The Invisible Power Sustaining Creation

Zero Point Energy: A Biblical Perspective

In our ongoing exploration of how the evidence all around us confirms the truth of God’s Word, we often discover that the more scientists probe the mysteries of the universe, the more clearly we see the hand of the Creator at work. One of the most fascinating discoveries in modern physics is something called zero point energy, or ZPE. This is the baseline energy present in the quantum vacuum, the very fabric of “empty” space itself, even at absolute zero temperature. Far from being nothing, the vacuum teems with fluctuating electromagnetic fields and virtual particles that pop in and out of existence. It is a vast, invisible ocean of energy that permeates every corner of the cosmos.

What makes ZPE so remarkable from a biblical viewpoint is not only its existence but its precise role in holding all matter together. Classical physics, before the insights of quantum mechanics, presented a serious problem for the stability of atoms. According to electromagnetic theory, an electron orbiting the nucleus of an atom should continuously radiate energy in the form of electromagnetic waves. Like a satellite losing altitude and spiraling inward, the electron would lose energy, slow down, and eventually collapse into the nucleus. If this happened, atoms would decay instantly, and with them, every structure in the universe; rocks, trees, our own bodies, would cease to exist. Matter itself would collapse.

Yet atoms do not collapse. Electrons remain in stable orbits. Why? The answer lies in zero point energy. In theories such as stochastic electrodynamics, the random fluctuations of the ZPE field constantly impart just the right amount of energy and momentum to the electron. These tiny impulses balance the energy the electron would otherwise radiate away, creating a dynamic equilibrium that keeps the atom from decaying. The ZPE provides exactly the stabilizing influence needed, neither too much nor too little, to prevent the collapse of electrons and, therefore, the collapse of all matter. Without this pervasive energy sea filling every cubic centimeter of space, the universe as we know it could not exist for even a fraction of a second.

This scientific reality echoes powerfully through the pages of Scripture. The Bible reveals that it is not an impersonal quantum field, but the living God Himself who upholds and sustains His creation moment by moment. Consider Colossians 1:17: “And he is before all things, and by him all things consist” (or “hold together,” as some translations render it). The Apostle Paul, writing under the inspiration of the Holy Spirit,

declares that in Christ “all things hold together.” Every atom, every electron orbit, every fluctuation in the vacuum is under His sovereign control.

Even more directly, Hebrews 1:3 tells us that the Son is “the brightness of his glory, and the express image of his person, and upholding all things by the word of his power.” The same powerful word that spoke the universe into existence in Genesis 1 continues to sustain it. What scientists describe as zero point energy—the foundational energy preventing atomic collapse—appears to be a physical manifestation of the sustaining “light” and power of Christ that fills all space.

The Gospel of John opens with this profound connection: “In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God… In him was life; and the life was the light of men. And the light shineth in darkness; and the darkness comprehended it not… That was the true Light, which lighteth every man that cometh into the world” (John 1:1, 4-5, 9). Christ is not only the Creator; He is the Light that enlightens and sustains every part of creation. Just as ZPE is omnipresent, filling the vacuum between the stars and within every atom, the Light of Christ permeates all things, giving life and order to the universe. It is the invisible power by which “we live, and move, and have our being” (Acts 17:28).

When God said, “Let there be light” on the first day of creation (Genesis 1:3), He was not merely introducing visible light to a formless void. He was establishing the foundational energy and order that would govern all physical reality. That same sustaining light continues to prevent the collapse of the very atoms that make up our world. The precision of zero point energy is no cosmic accident; it is the fingerprint of an all-wise, all-powerful Creator who designed the universe to declare His glory.

In a world that often feels like it is spinning toward chaos and collapse, this truth brings a flood of hope. The same Christ who stabilizes the quantum vacuum is the Savior who offers stability to our lives. He who upholds all things by the word of His power is the One who conquered death and offers eternal life to all who trust in Him. As we stand in awe of the scientific evidence confirming that an invisible, all-pervading energy keeps matter from collapsing, let us remember the greater spiritual reality: Jesus Christ is the Light of the world, and in Him we find not only the explanation for the universe’s existence but the sure hope of our own salvation.

The evidence is all around us, if only we have eyes to see. From the tiniest fluctuations in the quantum vacuum to the vast expanse of the heavens, God’s Word is being confirmed. I hope this discovery strengthens your faith and points you ever more clearly to the One in whom “all things hold together.” There is hope, abundant, overflowing hope, because the Light of Christ sustains it all.
