A Pre-Flood Earth without Axial Tilt?

(This is a continuation of the discussion introducing a theory developed by Dr. Wright.)

Analysis of Evidence for a Pre-Flood Earth without Axial Tilt

Our proposed model already incorporates a rapid change in Earth’s axial tilt (obliquity) during the Flood year through asymmetric debris impacts from the Rahab swarm, true polar wander (TPW), or a sudden obliquity shift. This raises the natural question: is there evidence that Earth originally had little or no axial tilt (near 0°) before the Rahab meteorite events at the time of the Flood?

Biblical Considerations

Genesis 1:14 states that God created the sun, moon, and stars “for signs and for seasons, and for days and years.” The Hebrew word for “seasons” (moed) primarily means appointed times or festivals rather than climatic seasons, so it does not require a 23.4° tilt from the beginning. On the other hand, Genesis 8:22 records God’s post-Flood promise: “While the earth remains, seedtime and harvest, cold and heat, summer and winter, day and night, shall not cease.” Some interpreters see this as the formal establishment of pronounced seasonal variation after the Flood, suggesting a more uniform pre-Flood climate with minimal tilt. This reading is circumstantial but consistent with the Rahab timeline: a low-tilt Earth before the Flood would have produced milder, more equatorial-like conditions globally, fitting the long pre-Flood lifespans and the overall “very good” creation (Genesis 1:31).

Scientific and Creationist Evidence

Direct empirical evidence for a pre-Flood zero or near-zero axial tilt is lacking, largely because the Flood itself is understood to have erased or deeply buried most pre-Flood surface features. Paleomagnetic and paleoclimate data are ambiguous and must be reinterpreted within the biblical framework.

  • Paleoclimate proxies: Fossil evidence of widespread tropical or subtropical vegetation in what are now polar regions (e.g., coal seams in Antarctica, palm-like plants in high latitudes) supported a more uniform pre-Flood climate. A near-zero tilt would eliminate strong seasonal contrasts and produce relatively even temperatures worldwide, consistent with these finds when they are attributed to pre-Flood conditions rather than Flood-deposited material.

  • The Dodwell hypothesis: In the 1930s–1950s, astronomer George Dodwell analyzed ancient gnomon (sundial) and solstice observations from Egypt, Babylonia, and elsewhere. He concluded that the obliquity of the ecliptic showed a systematic deviation from modern formulas, best explained by a sudden catastrophic shift in Earth’s axial tilt around 2345 BC (very close to traditional Flood dates). Dodwell proposed the Earth was nearly upright before this event and gradually recovered to the present 23.4°. While this hypothesis is a minority view even among creationists and has been critiqued for data selection and modeling assumptions, it remains one of the few quantitative attempts to link ancient astronomical records to a Flood-era tilt change.

In short, there is no conclusive “smoking gun” geological or astronomical proof of zero pre-Flood tilt. The evidence remains circumstantial and interpretive, relying on climate proxies and selective ancient observations.

Consistency with Our Model

Our theory is fully compatible with a pre-Flood Earth that had little or no axial tilt. A near-vertical axis would explain a more uniform global climate before the Flood, while the asymmetric impacts and mass redistribution from the Rahab debris swarm during the Flood year provide the exact physical mechanism needed for a rapid TPW or obliquity shift to the present 23.4°. This change would have been sudden on the biblical timescale (within the Flood year plus immediate post-Flood recovery) and would have introduced the strong seasonal contrasts promised in Genesis 8:22. The same event that slowed Earth’s rotation and lengthened the year could simultaneously have reoriented the spin axis, unifying the rotational, orbital, and climatic changes under one sovereign cataclysm.

While direct evidence is limited, the Rahab model offers a coherent physical explanation for a pre-Flood low-tilt Earth that was dramatically altered by the very meteorite swarm that delivered the asteroid belt and triggered the Flood. This scenario harmonizes biblical clues about pre- and post-Flood conditions, ancient astronomical records, and the observable cratering and isotopic patterns across the solar system without requiring deep time or uniformitarian assumptions. The scarred planets and moons serve as visible reminders of the same brief, intense events that reshaped Earth’s climate and calendar under God’s sovereign control (Colossians 1:17).
