Ancient Witnesses to Creation, the Flood, and God’s Unchanging Law

At The Flood Museum, we declare the truth of God’s Word from Genesis to Revelation. Just as the Lord preserved Noah and his family through the global Flood of judgment (Genesis 6–9), He has miraculously preserved every word of Scripture across the centuries. Among the most powerful exhibits in our collection are high-resolution images and detailed explanations of three extraordinary fragments from the Dead Sea Scrolls: 4Q201, 4Q4, and 4Q41. Discovered in 1952 in Cave 4 at Qumran near the Dead Sea, these manuscripts date from approximately 200–150 BC (4Q201 and 4Q4) to the late first century BC (4Q41). They stand as irrefutable proof that the Hebrew Bible we read today is the same text faithfully transmitted for over a thousand years—long before the Masoretic scribes produced treasures like the Aleppo Codex.

These scrolls were copied by devout Jewish scribes during the intertestamental period, centuries before the birth of Jesus Christ. Hidden in the arid caves of the Judean wilderness and protected by God’s providence for nearly 2,000 years, they emerged in the 1940s and 1950s as part of the greatest archaeological discovery of the Bible in modern times. Far from supporting evolutionary ideas of gradual development or corrupted texts, these fragments confirm the accuracy and divine preservation of Scripture exactly as the Bible claims: “The grass withereth, the flower fadeth: but the word of our God shall stand for ever” (Isaiah 40:8).

4Q201 – The Book of Watchers: A Pre-Flood Warning Preserved 4Q201 is one of the oldest known Aramaic manuscripts of the Book of Enoch (specifically the “Book of Watchers” section). Written around 200–150 BC, it describes the rebellion of the “Watchers”—fallen angels—who corrupted humanity before the Flood, leading to violence, giants (Nephilim), and the wickedness that grieved God’s heart (Genesis 6:1–7). This fragment echoes the biblical account of why the Lord sent the global deluge: “The earth also was corrupt before God, and the earth was filled with violence” (Genesis 6:11). Though Enoch itself is not part of our canonical Old Testament, the New Testament quotes it directly (Jude 14–15), showing its historical value. The survival of 4Q201 proves that the memory of the pre-Flood world and the reasons for God’s judgment were faithfully recorded and preserved by Noah’s descendants.

4Q4 – Genesis^d: The Creation Account in Its Original Purity 4Q4, also known as 4QGen^d, contains Genesis 1:18–27—the majestic description of Day Four (sun, moon, and stars), Day Five (sea creatures and birds), and Day Six (land animals and mankind created in God’s image). Every word matches the Masoretic Text we use today, including the repeated declaration that creatures reproduce “after their kind.” This tiny fragment, copied around 150 BC, demolishes the evolutionary myth of millions of years of gradual change. Instead, it stands as ancient confirmation that God created everything fully formed in six literal days, exactly as recorded in Genesis 1. The fact that this text is identical to what we read in our Bibles today shows the Holy Spirit’s sovereign protection of His Word across the millennia.

4Q41 – The All Souls Deuteronomy: The Ten Commandments Preserved Intact Often called the “All Souls Deuteronomy,” 4Q41 is one of the most beautifully preserved early copies of Deuteronomy. Dating to the late first century BC, it contains the Ten Commandments (Deuteronomy 5:1–33) in full, along with portions of Deuteronomy 6 and 8. The text is virtually identical to the Hebrew Bible used by Jesus and the apostles. This scroll reminds us that the moral law of God—written with His own finger on stone tablets at Sinai—has been kept pure and unchanged. Jesus Himself quoted from Deuteronomy during His temptation in the wilderness (Matthew 4), showing how these very words sustained the Son of God.

Together, 4Q201, 4Q4, and 4Q41 play a vital role in preserving Biblical truth. They prove that the Old Testament text was not corrupted, edited, or evolved over time. When compared with the Masoretic Text (completed around AD 900–1000), these scrolls show an astonishing 99%+ agreement, with only minor spelling variations that do not affect any doctrine. This is exactly what we would expect from a God who promised to preserve His Word (Psalm 12:6–7; Matthew 24:35). While critics once claimed the Bible had been altered over centuries, the Dead Sea Scrolls silenced those doubts forever.

These ancient fragments also tie directly to the theme of our museum. The Flood of Noah was real. The creation of the world in six days was real. The Law of God is real and unchanging. The same faithful Creator who saved eight souls on the Ark and scattered the nations at Babel has safeguarded His written revelation so that every generation can know the truth.

Just as God provided the Ark for physical salvation during the waters of judgment, He has given us His preserved Word to point us to the greater Ark of salvation—Jesus Christ. The Dead Sea Scrolls are not merely archaeological treasures; they are divine fingerprints declaring that “all scripture is given by inspiration of God” (2 Timothy 3:16).

Visit the Dead Sea Scrolls exhibit at The Flood Museum’s Nauvoo Bible Museum. Gaze upon the 4Q201, 4Q4, and 4Q41 and marvel at God’s perfect preservation. Let the evidence strengthen your faith that the Bible is true from the very first verse. The Flood happened. Creation happened. And the offer of eternal life through Jesus Christ stands open today. Come see—God’s Word endures forever!
