Space Satellites Reveal Rapid Turbulence in Earth’s Molten Outer Core

Striking Confirmation of the Creation Model for Earth’s Magnetism

In breakthrough research published May 22, 2026, by the University of Edinburgh’s School of GeoSciences, scientists using ESA’s Swarm satellite constellation have documented a startling reversal in the flow of molten iron deep inside Earth’s outer core. Analyzing two decades of high-precision magnetic data from Swarm, CryoSat, CHAMP, and Ørsted satellites plus ground observatories (1997–2025), the team applied principal component analysis to map changing fluid motions at the core-mantle boundary. Around 2010 a vast region beneath the equatorial Pacific abruptly switched from weak westward flow to strong eastward flow—only to begin weakening again after 2020. These decadal-scale shifts, linked to the 2017 geomagnetic jerk, show the core is far more dynamic and variable than uniformitarian models ever predicted.

Lead author Frederik Dahl Madsen emphasized that “the large-scale flow reversal beneath the Pacific raises new questions about the behaviour of Earth’s deep interior,” while ESA’s Swarm Mission Scientist Elisabetta Iorfida noted that regional changes can appear in just a decade, giving scientists “more insights into core-mantle boundary” processes and revealing a core “far more variable and complex than once believed.”

At A Flood of Hope, our articles on Earth’s magnetism—Earth’s Magnetic Dynamo and The Magnetic Catastrophe—have long shown that the liquid iron-nickel outer core generates our protective geomagnetic field through convection and electric currents. But secular scientists assume this dynamo slowly evolved over billions of years. Scripture and creation science tell a far more powerful story.

Dr. D. Russell Humphreys’ foundational work on the magnetism that arises from Creation provides the biblical framework these new satellite observations so beautifully confirm. In his landmark 1983 Creation Research Society Quarterly paper “The Creation of the Earth’s Magnetic Field” and the 1984 follow-up “The Creation of Planetary Magnetic Fields,” Humphreys demonstrated how God supernaturally created a powerful initial geomagnetic field on Day 3 of Creation Week. By aligning the nuclear spins of hydrogen nuclei (protons) in the primordial water described in Genesis 1:2, the Creator produced microscopic magnetic fields that summed to a strong macroscopic field. This alignment immediately induced electric currents in the forming core, establishing the geodynamo without any need for deep time or gradual evolution. Humphreys’ rigorous physical models—built directly on the biblical text—then predict exponential decay of that field (with a measured half-life of roughly 1,400–2,000 years), perfectly matching observatory data since 1835 and paleomagnetic records once freed from old-earth assumptions.

During the global Flood of Noah’s day (Genesis 7:11), catastrophic plate tectonics and massive upheaval violently stirred the electrically conductive fluid in the outer core. Humphreys’ later modeling of dynamic decay and rapid reversals showed that these Flood-year disturbances could produce dozens of polarity flips—sometimes every week or two—along with a sharp overall drop in field strength. Lava flows at Steens Mountain, Oregon, record exactly this pattern. The Edinburgh team’s detection of a swift, large-scale flow reversal beneath the Pacific is not some mysterious anomaly; it is a modern-day echo of the very turbulent core dynamics Humphreys’ creation model has predicted for decades.

Secular researchers remain surprised by how quickly core flows can change and how tightly they couple to inner-core behavior. Yet when viewed through Humphreys’ biblical physics, these satellite insights are precisely what we expect from a young, maturely created Earth whose dynamo was designed by God to respond powerfully to the judgment of the Flood. The same field that shields us from solar radiation today was dramatically stronger and more active during and immediately after the Flood—conditions that also accelerated post-Flood genetic variation within created kinds while contributing to the rapid decline we observe today.

Once again, real-world data is catching up to what the Bible has always taught. Earth’s molten outer core is not a slow, stable clock ticking for billions of years but a dynamic system shaped by the Creator’s direct intervention at the beginning and powerfully affected by the global Flood. As we continue to monitor these ongoing core changes with ever-better satellites, we see fresh testimony to the accuracy of God’s Word and to the reliability of Dr. Humphreys’ creation-based magnetism models.
